Johnson Splits with Pulliam - Extends SoBo Point Lead

posted on July 28 2010

South Boston, VA --

Chalk up another win in a twin for Justin Johnson.

With track conditions a problem earlier in the day, qualifying was cancelled and the field was lined up by points, putting 2009 track champion and current point leader Justin Johnson on the pole for race 1 of a twin 75 Lap doubleheader. Due to second and third practice being cancelled, as well as qualifying, Johnson's car wasn't set up exactly as it needed to be, and Johnson spent the majority of the first race far too tight. Stacy Puryear would take the early lead, with Johnson falling back to third behind Lee Pulliam. Pulliam would rally past Puryear for the lead and win the first race, with Johnson never falling further back than third.

With a three-car invert after the first race, Johnson again was on the pole. After some changes made to the setup of the car, Johnson's car was more free and a bit easier to motor around the historic .4 mile track. Again, Puryear would take the early lead, but this time Johnson would move to the point on lap 3 and never look back. Despite a few late cautions and a potential steering problem on the FDJ Motorsports machine, Johnson held off the advances of Puryear, Pulliam and David Latour, winning the second race. The win keeps Johnson perfect for the year in second-half races.

Justin Johnson Racing returns to South Boston Speedway to continue the defense of his 2009 track championship with 150 laps of Late Model Stock racing.

Justin Johnson Takes Another at Motor Mile

posted on July 15 2010

With South Boston Speedway taking the night off, it was time for another trip up to Motor Mile Speedway for 2009 SoBo track champion Justin Johnson.

Having practiced well all weekend, Johnson was confident his car would qualify well. A starting spot on the outside of Row 1 would verify those thoughts, as the FDJ Motorsports machine started on the outside of Motor Mile Speedway regular Tommy Lemons Jr.

Early on it was Lemons setting the pace, while Johnson followed. Johnson made a mid-race challenge for the lead on Lap 70, but had that move blocked by Lemons. It would be another 30 laps until Johnson made another move for the lead, this time on Lap 103. This move would prove to be successful, and Johnson would lead the majority of the laps from there out.

A late caution with Lemons in front by a nose led to a restart with Lemons first and Johnson second. Johnson would ride behind Lemons for the majority of the final 9 green flag laps. Johnson would make one final charge under Lemons, and as the duo came off turn 4, contact was made, and both Lemons and Johnson crossed the line almost attached, with Johnson getting the advantage at the end. Lemons Jr. would cross second by hundredths of a second, with Mike Looney third, Derrick Lancaster fourth and Nate Monteith fifth.

Justin Johnson returns to defend his 2009 track championship in the Puryear Tank Lines Toyota this Saturday night at South Boston Speedway in a twin-75 lap showdown against contenders Deac McCaskill and Stacy Puryear

Johnson, Pulliam Split at South Boston

posted on June 22 2010

On a nght where South Boston Speedway had its largest field of the season, Justin Johnson once again added to his point total, winning the second half of a twin 75 lap double-header.

In the night's first race, Johnson qualified 8th, and would have a tough time moving through the field at the tight 4/10 mile track. By lap 17, Johnson had moved to sixth, but had trouble moving up from there as the leaders raced hard in front of him. By 25 to go, Johnson had moved to fifth. A late caution would give Tommy Lemons Jr. and David Latour both a shot at the point-leader, but Johnson would hold them off for a solid top-five finish. Up front, Lee Pulliam won his first race of the year, over 2009 national champion Philip Morris, Stacy Puryear and Woody Howard.

With a five-car invert, Justin Johnson sat on the pole for the night's second event, but it would be Woody Howard and Philip Morris pulling out to first and second early on. Johnson would battle back, taking the lead for good on lap 56. Morris, Puryear, Michael Hardin and Latour would round out the top five.

The win is the 8th for Johnson on the season. He currently holds a 108 point lead on second place Stacy Puryear and a 149 point lead on Deac McCaskill, who's third.

Johnson Takes 1 of 2 at South Boston

posted on June 3 2010

Memorial Day weekend saw another successful night of racing for Justin Johnson and the Puryear Tank Lines Toyota team.

In the first of two 75 lap events, Justin qualified mid-pack and quickly moved his way to the front. Track conditions would play a factor, though, with Johnson unable to put his FDJ Motorsports machine to the apron of the track. This made passing difficult, and catching the leader Stacy Puryear was of the utmost difficulty. At the end of the race, though, Johnson has secured a 3rd place finish.

"Passing is tough with the track being how it is" said Johnson, predicting that if he were to sit on the pole, he would dominate the second event.

Puryear drew a "3" for the invert for the second race, putting Johnson on the pole. True to his word, Johnson would lead every lap despite a late charge from Lee Pulliam. The win made Johnson a 7-time winner on the season, helping him maintain a third-place spot in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series points.

Next week Justin Johnson Racing returns to Motor Mile Speedway.

Johnson Passes Late - Wins 6th of Year

posted on May 20 2010

Justin Johnson came into the May 15 150 lap event at South Boston with five wins and in second place in National Points. With a full field of Late Model Stocks in action, Johnson needed a win to cut into Keith Rocco's national point lead.

Johnson qualified fourth, on the outside of another FDJ car, Jeb Burton. After a lap 4 caution, Johnson made quick work of Burton, and moved onto battling with Lee Pulliam. Pulliam had a quick car all evening, and was able to pull away from Johnson's Puryear Tank Lines Toyota Camry on short runs. By lap 80, though, Johnson had madeup the 15 car lengths and passed Pulliam just before a David Latour spin that would bring out the caution.

Fighting a tight car all night, Johnson needed almost 20 green flag laps per run to get to Nick Smith, who had led from the opening flag. With 15 laps to go, Johnson was finally able to catch Smith. After 7 laps of hard racing, Johnson made it by, holding on for the final 8 laps to win his sixth race of 2010.

Justin Johnson will be taking the coming weekend off before returning to the historic 4/10 mile South Boston Speedway for their twin 75 lap event. It's then on to Motor Mile Speedway for the first two weekends in June.

Johnson Wins 1 of 2 at South Boston

posted on May 10 2010

South Boston Speedway Late Model Stock point leader Justin Johnson continued his winning ways, taking half of the two twin 75 lap events at the historic 4/10 mile speedway.

In the first event, Johnson qualified fifth, behind Nick Smith, Kenny Forbes, Stacy Puryear and Philip Morris. The fifth position would be short-lived, however, as Puryear and Johnson quickly dispensed of Morris.

A long battle with the 2008 Orange County Speedway track champion would ensue. During the race w/ Puryear, the two drivers made their way past Kenny Forbes, moving to second and third respectively. A lap 53 pass on Puryear would move Johnson to second place, but with the shorter race, Johnson ran out of time, finishing second behind Nick Smith.

In the second 75 lap event, the top three would invert, with Johnson starting on the outside of row 1, with Puryear underneath him and race 1 winner Smith starting third. Johnson would make quick work of Puryear at the start of the race, quickly moving to the point from the outside. Despite a flurry of charges from Smith, Johnson was able to hold on for the win. Smith and Deac McCaskill would round out the top three.

Justin Johnson returns to South Boston Speedway to continue the defense of his 2009 track championship. The NASCAR Whelen All-American Series drivers will take to the historic 4/10 mile oval for 150 laps.

Johnson Doubles Up At South Boston

posted on April 19 2010

After a disappointing trip to Motor Mile, Justin Johnson regained his swagger this week at South Boston Speedway, winning both ends of a Twin 75 lap event. Johnson put down a solid qualifying run of a 15.565, only .019 behind pole-sitter Deac McCaskill, but would have to start on the outside of row 2, behind Stacy Puryear and Nick Smith. The early lead would go to Stacy Puryear, Deac McCaskill had handling issues early. After a multi-lap side-by-side battle with McCaskill, Johnson moved to second by lap 15, and set Puryear in his sights. Slowly, Johnson worked his way closer to Puryear, before a lap 55 caution put Johnson right to Puryear's bumper. The lap 55 restart placed a lapped car between Johnson and third place McCaskill, giving Johnson all the room he needed to work past Stacy Puryear. A late caution would give Puryear one more chance at Johnson, but Johnson pulled away, winning the first of two races, ahead of Puryear, Lee Pulliam and Deac McCaskill. A four-car invert based on the first race running order put Johnson back to fourth again, with McCaskill once again sitting on the pole. A loose Stacy Puryear would check up the outside line, moving Puryear and Justin Johnson back to fifth and sixth, respectively. After two early cautions, a 30-lap green flag gave Justin time to work, moving him from sixth up to second. Late cautions dogged the #44 FDJ motorsports team, as Johnson reported an issue with the carb. It would take Johnson a couple of laps to get going, allowing McCaskill to pull ahead. A long run allowed Johnson the time he needed to get back past McCaskill, holding the Raleigh driver off late to capture the back end of the night's double-header. McCaskill finished second, just ahead of Nick Smith. Next week it's right back to South Boston Speedway where Justin will continue to defend his 2009 track championship.

Johnson Overcomes Trouble - Finishes 8th at Motor Mile

posted on April 11 2010

Justin Johnson made his first trip to Motor Mile Speedway in two years in search of a state title, but found a speed bump in the way. A decent qualifying run of 9th (of 34) put Johnson solidly in the field for the night's 150 lap main event at the Radford, VA .4 mile speedway. Early in the race it was apparent that the Puryear Tank Lines Toyota was a contender. Within 20 laps, Johnson was even with the fifth place machine. The race stayed that way until lap 50 when a spin brought out the first caution of the evening. On the restart, the leaders bobbled, the field stacked up and Johnson was hit from behind, spinning him and sending the FDJ driver to the rear of the field. Johnson used the next 100 laps as a solid test run, moving all the way up to 8th, and contending for a top five finish. Time ran out, and Johnson would have to settle for a 8th place finish. Justin will take a week off, before returning to South Boston Speedway, where he leads in points.

Johnson Rallies, Finishes 6th

posted on March 23 2010

For the second time in two races, Justin Johnson led late, but this time was bumped out of contention for the win. Bucking the trend of the past season, Justin Johnson qualified third going into the first 150 lap race of 2010 at South Boston Speedway. From the early running, it was clear that there were two cars on contention for the win: CE Falk and Justin Johnson. Through a 90-lap green flag run to start the race, Falk (the pole sitter) pulled out to a sizeable lead. As is tradition, though, Johnson worked his way through lapped traffic to take the lead on lap 125, only to be spun by Falk a lap later. Despite having to go to the tail of the field, Justin managed to rally, finishing sixth behind winner Tommy Lemons Jr., Lee Pulliam, Stacy Puryear, Deac McCaskill and Rodney Cook. Falk was black-flagged for his rough driving and finished one lap down. This makes two races in a row where Johnson has beaten the first and second place drivers in Virginia for 2009.

On Wednedsday night July 2, Justin Johnson raced the Bailey's Cigarettes Pontiac in the Rusty Harpe Memorial 200 at Caraway Speedway. The team was fast in practice but when Justin went to start the car for qualifying the battery was dead forcing the team to push start the car from pit road. Justin qualified 16th out of the thirty-two cars in his first trip to the race track. By lap 63 Justin had worked his way up to the 9th position and was closing on the cars ahead. Bad luck was soon to follow when a wreck occured off of turn 4 and badly damaged the #44 car. On Thursday July 3, Justin felt confident he could win the Bailey's 200 at South Boston Speedway. The team struggled in qualifying and Justin was forced to start 13th in the twenty-eight car field. By lap seven Justin had moved up to 8th and it was beginning to look like he was going to be a contender for the win. On the 9th lap Justin struck the back of the #91 car of David Quackenbush entering turn three which caused the #91 to spin and broke the right front spindle on the #44 Impala SS. Justin went approximately fifty laps down and was able to salvage an 18th place finish pushing him to second in the championship standings. Justin said after the race "this is extremely dissapointing and a set back for us in the championship standings. The wreck was completely my fault, I drove in hard and the cars in front of me bottled up and I had no where to go. I want to apologize to the cars involved and my team for my mistake."
